your niece (cross niece: female's brother's daughter or male's sister's daughter)

Note:
A daughter of your sibling (your brother or sister) is called a niece in English but in Anishinaabemowin there are two different terms depending on the relative gender of the siblings. If their gender is different, then the daughter is a cross niece, a female's brother's daughter or a male's sister's daughter. There is no simple independent word for this relative. A personal prefix goes with the dependent noun stem /=shimis-/ niece (cross-niece) to make a full word:
  • nishimis my niece (cross niece) (1s-3s)
  • gishimis your niece (cross niece) (2s-3s)
  • oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece)
  • [MN] oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece) / nieces (cross nieces) (3s-3')
  • [BL] oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece) (3s-3's)
  • [BL] oshimisa’ h/ nieces (cross nieces)) (3s-3'p)
Some basic forms of gishimis your niece (cross niece) are:
