=shimis- nad

STEM FOR: niece (cross niece: female's brother's daughter or male's sister's daughter)

Note:
A sibling's daughter is called niece in English but in Anishinaabemowin there are two different terms depending on the relative gender of the siblings. If their gender is different, then the daughter is a cross-niece, a female's brother's daughter or a male's sister's daughter. There is no simple independent word for this relative. A personal prefix goes with the dependent noun stem /=shimis-/ niece (cross-niece) to make a full word:
  • nishimis my niece (cross niece) (1s-3s)
  • gishimis your niece (cross niece) (2s-3s)
  • oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece)
  • [MN] oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece) / nieces (cross nieces) (3s-3')
  • [BL] oshimisan h/ niece (cross niece) (3s-3's)
  • [BL] oshimisa’ h/ nieces (cross nieces) (3s-3'p)
