Description:
Graphite drawing of a woman dressed in 19th century period clothing scraping a hide that is draped over a log in the foreground of a tent by Lieutenant Seth Eastman (1808-1875). Eastman was a West Point graduate and artist commissioned by the US Congress. It was during his first tour at Fort Snelling, MN in 1830 that he met his wife, Wakan Inazin Win (daughter of Mapiya Wicasta). Their first daughter Wakan Tanka Win or Mary Nancy Eastman was the mother of physician and author Ohiyesa or Charles Eastman.
